Yoga and Culture Retreat in the spiritual, sunny town of Ubud, Bali wIth Laura Martini
About Ubud: Ubud is a town in central Bali that is often referred to as the “cultural heart” of Bali. It is surrounded by jungle ravines and lush rice paddies. It is home to the Bali Monkey Forest and is well-known for it’s love of the arts. Ubud has a plethora of restaurants including many organic cafes catering to the healthy needs of frequent yoga retreaters. One of my favourites is the Clear Cafe. Ubud is within an hour’s drive of the ocean (which we will be visiting during the retreat) and has many attractions including beautiful hikes, fantastic local markets, and luxurious spas.
Accommodations: We are staying in Balinese cottages 3 doors down from the Balinese healer Wayan, who is now famous from her role in Elizabeth Gilbert’s book and movie, “Eat, Pray, Love”. Accommodations are double occupancy and breakfast and tea will be served daily at the cottages. Cottages include pool access and are within walking distance of downtown Ubud.
Food: All breakfasts, afternoon teas, and 4 dinners are included in the price of your retreat. Breakfast is light and commonly consists of tropical fruit, tea or coffee, and eggs and toast or banana pancakes. For meals that are not provided, Balinese restaurants vary from $1 meals of rice and fried veggies in a spicy sauce at a roadside “warrung” to $10 for a 3 course meal similar to what you’d find in the west.
Yoga: Each day Laura will lead 2 all levels yoga classes. The morning class will be more powerful in nature and will likely be a vinyasa flow style class. The evening classes will be more gentle and restorative. Laura will also lead conversations on yogic philosophy, history, and ethics throughout the retreat. Laura is able to accommodate anyone on her retreats, including those with severe injuries and/or no yoga practice whatsoever. Classes will on average be 1.5 hours in length.
Balinese cultural experiences: Included in your retreat are daily excursions to various cultural activities. All activities are optional and may include but are not limited to visiting the Monkey Forest, shopping at the local market, seeing a Kecak dance, visiting a sustainable chocolate farm, driving to a surf beach, drinking Bintang beers by the pool, observing local festivals and ceremonies, visiting sacred temples, learning how craft a Balinese offering.
