Eight Kelowna yoga studios will be coming together in early January to host the Share the Love Community Practice to Support Mental Health.
Join your yoga community for an all-levels practice at Laurel Packing House on Saturday, January 13 from 10-11:30 a.m.
The event is being co-hosted by Global Fitness & Racquet Centre’s Pur Yoga Studio, Ekahi Center, The Hot Box Yoga, Moksha Yoga Kelowna, Oxygen Yoga & Fitness, Kelowna Yoga House, Tandava, The Women’s Place and Yoga Warehouse. Vendors on site will be Glow Juicery and Raw Athletics.
This charity event will raise funds for the Canadian Mental Health Association Kelowna and will support programming at CMHA Kelowna’s Wellness Development Centre (WDC), which includes weekly yoga and meditation classes for individuals living with mental health concerns in our community.
“For many, this may be their introduction to or only opportunity to practice yoga,” says Vashti Sullivan, Communications Specialist for CMHA Kelowna. “We have many regular participants who carve out the time Tuesday to Thursday to show up as they are and take time to practice alongside their peers.”
The WDC’s mandate is to provide opportunities for individuals to get to know, explore and understand themselves more fully. The Centre has 382 active participants who take part in their programs throughout the year. Sullivan says yoga is, by far, one of the most well-attended programs within the WCC. Since April 2017, the centre has offered 113 classes three to four classes a week with an average of six participants per class.
When asked what yoga means to them, participants gave responses like: “yoga is a life saver,” “a crucial part of my recovery program,” “yoga helps me love myself and become more acquainted with me,” “the most rewarding part of my day,” “relaxing, energizing and grounding” and “very important to my physical and mental well-being.”
Mental health is an issue that touches us all and wellness is not a destination, rather it is something that we must work at daily. We can cultivate well-being in many ways, including activities like yoga and meditation which have so many benefits to both mind and body, including reducing stress, anxiety and depression, and improving focus, concentration, self-esteem, confidence and relaxation.
